Daffodil planting on Tower Hill Saturday morning

This Saturday, October 1, at 9:00 a.m., the Prospect Park Garden Club invites neighbors to join in for a daffodil planting on Tower Hill. The club is donating hundreds of bulbs and will be planting to a plan developed by a Minneapolis Parks horticulturist. Remember the fabulous drifts of daffodils last spring near the tennis courts? This will extend those plantings. We'll meet in front of Pratt School. Please bring bulb planters, spades, etc., and help out for an hour or so. NEIGHBORHOOD CLEANUP DATE ANNOUNCED

On September 24^th PPERRIA will host its’ 17^th neighborhood clean-up. The event will begin with a breakfast at 1933 East River Parkway at 8:30AM. Trucks will roll at 9AM and we will complete our tasks before noon. We will once again collect brush (no need to tie into bundles), tires, metal (with all wood or concrete removed), and concrete. While the event provides and vital and necessary service to the community, it is also a great way to meet and greet your neighbors and have a fun Saturday morning. We can always use an extra pickup truck or two, and more younger volunteers are always appreciated. No need to preregister, just show up. (we need about 50 volunteers). If you have stuff you would like picked up, have it on the curb by 9AM. There are a few more specific details on the PPERRIA web site.

Concert-goers in Prospect Park will need to put on hold their anticipation for the upcoming St. Paul Postal Band performance. With the heat wave in full blast, the concert committee unanimously decided to postpone the concert for another date, when there may only be rain or snow to deal with! We are so disappointed to delay this concert, but felt the risks and discomfort to the 25 band members was simply too much to ask of them. Please stay tuned to the e-list for an announcement of a rescheduled date for the St. Paul Postal Band, directed by our own Prospect Park resident, Joe Jones.

So come hear an afternoon concert of trumpets, euphoniums, horn and tuba with a full, rich, brass sound. Will play classical (Victor Ewald), modern (Duke Ellington), and early American (Stephen Foster) compositions. We might even throw in some Gus Gunzel! * More Info: This sextet is led by the two euphonium players, Marilee Johnson and Cameron Bradley. On French horn is Bob Garnett. A free-will offering will be taken to benefit Pratt Council/Friends of Pratt and SOKOL Minnesota (more information below). Frank Trnka - Dudy, Piano, Recorder Jody Ouradnik - Folk Harp, Voice, Recorder Stu Anderson - Saxophones, Pedal Steel Guitar note: Two of the performers, Jody and Stu, are Prospect Park residents. This concert celebrates Czech music, old & new, traditional folk & classical, plus familiar American tunes, but all sung in Czech. The performers will be in “kroj” (traditional Czech folkdress). Concert attendees who wish to come dressed in traditional Czech folkdress are encouraged to do so! We'll be presenting several different musical styles and instrumental/vocal combinations: I. Czech folk tunes performed on guitar, harp, & dudy (Czech bagpipe) II. Dvorak’s Romantic Pieces and the Scherzo from the Violin Sonatina in G, performed on sax and piano III. The event, a rally sponsored by a political party, will begin to admit people at 12:00 noon, and the event program is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. A Gopher football game is also scheduled for October 23 with a start time of 11:00 a.m., so the campus will be busy.

Helping others through service learning is an important part of the Pratt Summer Splash program. The children of Summer Splash have been working hard on a service project to raise funds for the American Humane Association. They will be holding a Charity Handmade Jewelry Sale on Tuesday, July 27, 2:00-4:00 pm at the Pratt playground and arbor area. (The sale will be held indoors at Pratt if it is raining.) The jewelry made by the children includes necklaces, bracelets and earrings at a price range of $3.00 to $5.00.

All proceeds will go to the American Humane Association, whose mission is to protect children and animals from cruelty, abuse and neglect. Summer Splash is a great six-week program for children who have completed kindergarten through grade 5. Summer Splash is held Monday through Friday, June 21 through July 29, 1:00-4:15 pm. We gather at Luxton Park, then walk as a group to Pratt School where most of our afternoon activities take place, and return to Luxton Park for parent pick-up at 4:15 pm. Activities include sports, arts, crafts, games, an afternoon at the nearby Textile Center, computers, cooking, fun reading activities, and more. We also go on a field trip each Friday including the newest Three Rivers Regional Park at Silverwood, Fort Snelling, Roller Gardens, Lupient Waterpark and Long Lake Regional Park Beach.

The fee for the entire six weeks including all activities, a t-shirt, and field trips is $129 for Minneapolis residents. Scholarships are available. Two Choral Concerts in Prospct Park on Sunday, May 16

1. Mostly Madrigals, an a cappella vocal ensemble under the direction of Stephen Houtz, will present a spring concert, “Flora and Fauna” on Sunday, May 16, 2010 at 3 PM. The concert will be held at Prospect Park United Methodist Church, 22 Orlin Avenue SE in Minneapolis, "under the witch's hat". The concert is free, but a donation of $5.00 is appreciated.

“Flora and Fauna” is a musical celebration of plant-life and wildlife. The concert will feature a selection of madrigals–including “Flora Gave Me Fairest Flowers,” “Sweet Suffolk Owl,” and “The Silver Swan”–selections by Benjamin Britten, Paul Hindemith and two new pieces written for Mostly Madrigals: “The Trees In the Garden” by Stephen Houtz on a poem by D.H. Lawrence and “Arachnophobia” by assistant director, Mark Bauer. Selected solos and duets performed by members of the group will be featured throughout the concert.

Mostly Madrigals is a community-based vocal ensemble that performs madrigals and other a cappella vocal music dating from the Renaissance to the 21st Century. The members come together from all walks of life, with varying experience, to create music and share the joy of singing. The group has been singing together for over ten years, performing at least two concerts a year.

New Residential Energy Program Coming to the University District Alliance Neighborhoods!

The University District Alliance is proud to introduce Community Energy Services, a partnership with the Center for Energy and Environment, CenterPoint Energy and Xcel Energy. All homeowners of 1-4 unit owner occupied residences in Cedar Riverside, Marcy Holmes, Prospect Park, and SE Como are invited to participate in one of the workshops.

Community Energy Services Provides:

· FREE educational workshops to teach homeowners how to lower their energy use and save money;

· Installed materials that may include: low flow showerheads, setback thermostats, compact fluorescent light bulbs, gasket seals, door sweeps, faucet aerators, pipe wrap and more to help participants save now;

· Customized home energy visits from 2 energy experts who will spend an hour and a half with homeowners in the home installing materials and performing diagnostics including a blower door test. Up to $400 in services and materials for a co-pay of only $30.

There are two preschool special education classrooms moving to Pratt School located at 636 Malcolm Ave SE for the 2010-11 school year. The ECSE (Early Childhood Special Education) preschool classroom teachers will soon be accepting applications for our preschool program for the 2010-11 school year! We are looking for 3-5 year olds who will excel in our diverse classrooms and can act as positive social and language role models. Our goal for the neighborhood children (Prospect Park, Seward, Longfellow) is to have them provide age appropriate language and social models. Franklin Avenue / East River Parkway Intersection Plans

View plans for improvements to the Franklin Avenue / East River Parkway Intersection On August 25, 2009, Hennepin County and the City of Minneapolis sponsored an Open House / Public Meeting to present the recommended short-term concept improvement plan for the 5-legged intersection at the east end of the Franklin Avenue Bridge and East River Parkway. The recommended Traffic Management Plan is intended to improve clarity and safety for all users while also reducing delay. This approach does not require complete street reconstruction, but does include a new traffic signal system with video detection for cars and bikes, bike lanes, pedestrian crossing treatments, improved lane assignments and signing and other improvements. Project team members will be present for the poster board sessions of the PPERRIA Annual Meeting to explain the latest drawings and answer questions. COMMUNITY INVITATION TO THE PRATT TOWER CLUB PRODUCTION OF “THE WIZARD OF OZ” Community members are cordially invited to attend the Pratt Tower Club performance of “The Wizard of Oz,” next Tuesday, April 13, at 5:00-6:00 pm in the Pratt Gym. The children have been working with Director Jakki Kydd-Fidelman for many weeks on this magical and entertaining play production.
